THE SPORTS

Silver Surfer.jpg

/   surfing

Surfing is the granddaddy of board riding sports and was developed in the tropical islands of ancient Hawaii. Today, surfers enjoy riding waves on coastlines all over the world. Surfboards have evolved from ancient times to the sophisticated crafts ridden today. However, over the last forty years the major changes have primarily been in shape, construction, and materials with the fin configuration for performance surfing (three-fin or thruster) remaining mostly unchanged.

AQUAFOILS™ introduces wing lift to the sport resulting in increase speed, acceleration and enhanced maneuverability. Additionally, their outboard positioning adds stability that is especially helpful for those learning the sport

Kite Boarding - Lay Back Carve.jpg

/   kiteboarding

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is an action sport combining board riding and kitesailing. It is performed on both flat water and in the surf. The sport harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to propel the kiteboarder across the water's surface.

As currently configured, kite boards are very limited in their ability to travel upwind, with expert riders only attaining 10 to 15 degrees towards the windward direction. The ability to sail windward poses a major challenge to learning the sport, but once mastered greatly enhances the overall experience. By introducing wing lift to the sport, AQUAFOILS™ have proven to greatly increase a kiteboard's upwind efficiency while providing greater maneuverability, thus providing a highly enhanced riding experience.

/   windsurfing

Windsurfing is a sport that combines the elements of surfing and sailing. The rider planes across the water's surface on a board rigged with a sail. The sport is performed on both flat water and waves.

AQUAFOILS™ introduces additional lift to windsurfing boards resulting in reduced drag, increased velocity, and enhanced maneuverability.

Wake Boarding 2.jpg

/   stand up paddle boarding

Stand up paddle boarders stand on their boards and use a paddle to propel themselves on both flat water and in the surf.

SUP used in waves will experience the same benefits as surfboards through the introduction of AQUAFOILS™. Because SUP are less maneuverable than surfboards, riders will appreciate the added pivoting capability provided by AQUAFOILS™.

/   wakeboarding

Wakesurfing is a sport in which a rider trails behind a boat, riding the boat's wake, without actually being directly pulled by the boat (as in water skiing). Enthusiasts invest in boats which are specifically designed to create a surfable wake.

The wave form created behind boats is substantially less powerful than ocean waves. For this reason, AQUAFOILS™ will greatly benefit the sport through more efficient use of the wave energy available.

THE INSPIRATION

Could biomimicry - the imitation of natural biological designs in engineering or innovation - be the answer to achieving greater lift, speed, hold, and maneuverability in surfing? Could mimicking dolphin's and shark's laterally-oriented fins be the key to unlocking a new level of surfing potential?

The answer is yes. And the results are remarkable.

Inspired by mother nature, AQUAFOILS™ brings fresh biomimicry innovation to surfing.

THE TECHNOLOGY

In performance wave riding, the surfer travels in a direction roughly aligned with the wave crest, parallel to the shore.

A position just ahead of the breaking action of the wave or ideally under the wave lip (in the tube) is where

the highest-level riding occurs. As the wave continues shoreward, its surface is continually rising which presents

ongoing potential for the surfer to utilize the wave motion. The generation of velocity is critical as it is the main ingredient for

executing maneuvers and maximizing the length of ride; the prime goals in performance surfing.

As a conventional surfboard moves forward, the bottom surface generates lift and once a critical speed has been reached, the board begins to plane on the water’s surface, like a speed boat. The necessary speed is achieved by dropping

down the slope of a wave under the force of gravity. This type of lift, from the interaction between the surfboard bottom

and the water surface, is termed planing lift.

As opposed to conventional surfboards with fins located solely on the bottom of the board, AQUAFOILS™ introduce wing lift where fluid flows over both the bottom and top surface of foils that are laterally oriented in the same manner as

pectoral fins and airplane wings. This method of lift generation is of the order of ten times more efficient than planing

lift. As a result, AQUAFOILS™ cause a board to ride higher on the water with less displacement, less drag, and

additional lift resulting in increased speed. Additionally, AQUAFOILS™ provide elevated surfboard response

characteristics due to the pivot point created from their outboard placement. In kiteboarding, AQUAFOILS™ deliver

game-changing upwind performance.

The combination of increased speed generating capability and enhanced surfboard response have very beneficial results including:

  • More speed for performing and recovering from maneuvers

  • Enhanced length of ride due to the ability to harness more of a waves energy

  • Allow more graceful lines to be drawn on a wave by reducing the requirement for surfboard “pumping”

  • Increase ability to make fast breaking sections of waves

  • Aid beginner and intermediate surfers to learn how to gain and utilize speed

  • Enhance turning characteristics

  • Adaptable to varying condition

  • Increase board stability; a great aid in learning to surf

  • Increased upwind efficiency for kiteboarding and windsurfing.

The adoption of AQUAFOILS™ results in elevated performance characteristics which are markedly more efficient than current fin setups.
